Pope Francis has urged Singapore’s political leaders to focus on ensuring fair wages for foreign workers in the country.
The 87-year-old Pontiff emphasized the need for special attention to be given to the poor and the elderly. He also stressed the importance of protecting the dignity of migrant workers.
Pope Francis delivered these remarks during a meeting attended by over 1,000 political, civil, and religious leaders.
He underscored the significant contributions of these workers to the growth of Singapore’s economy.
There are over 1.1 million foreign workers in Singapore, including approximately 290,000 domestic workers and more than 441,000 employed in the construction and shipping sectors.
Most of these workers come from neighboring countries such as Malaysia, China, Bangladesh, India, and the Philippines.
