According to the police, a “person of interest” has been identified in connection with the crime. The suspect, a tricycle driver known to Guarte, was named by a witness, said Police Lt. Col. Roden Fulache, the Calapan City police chief.

Tolentino expressed his condolences, calling Guarte a “big loss to Philippine sports,” particularly in obstacle racing and athletics.

He also stated that he hopes the crime is resolved soon.

The POC president confirmed he would reach out to local officials, including Calapan City Mayor Malou Flores-Morillo and Oriental Mindoro Governor Humerlito Hyn Dolor, to discuss the matter.

Guarte was a multi-time medalist, having won gold in the men’s 5km event at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games and the men’s team relay at the 2023 SEA Games.

He also earned two silver medals at the 2011 SEA Games in the men’s 800-meter and 1500-meter events.

Tolentino also extended his condolences to the Philippine Obstacle Sports Federation, whose president Atty. Al Agra, was recently appointed head of the POC’s arbitration committee.

The local sports community shared their sorrow, with many athletes posting tributes to Guarte on social media, remembering their time with the late athlete.
