The PH-South Korea Knowledge Sharing Program (KSP) for 2024/25 will be launched as a bilateral cooperation initiative to strengthen energy collaboration and develop a safer, more resilient energy system.
This initiative follows discussions between the Philippine and South Korean governments in August last year, establishing a platform for knowledge and expertise exchange.
Through this cooperation, the Philippines will gain insights from South Korea’s advanced energy technologies while sharing its expertise in geothermal and pumped hydropower generation.
Key South Korean energy institutions participating in the program include the Korea Energy Economics Institute (KEEI), Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA), and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP).
The Asia Economic Development Committee (AEDC) of South Korea will oversee the implementation of the program in the Philippines.
Department of Energy (DOE) Undersecretary Alessandro O. Sales emphasized the significance of this initiative in shaping energy policies and strengthening institutions.
He highlighted that insights from KSP will aid in policy formulation and the adoption of innovative energy solutions tailored to the country’s growing demands.
Senator Sherwin Gatchalian, who attended the event, noted that while South Korea will benefit from the Philippines’ expertise in geothermal and hydropower, the Philippines, in turn, will gain valuable knowledge in smart grids, battery storage, and nuclear energy.
The 2024/25 KSP will focus on addressing key energy priorities, including the expansion of electric vehicle infrastructure, renewable energy integration, grid modernization, and advanced battery storage systems.
The Philippines aims to achieve a 35% renewable energy share by 2030.
Under KSP, the Philippines has submitted three key proposals: accelerating electric vehicle adoption, integrating floating solar and smart grid technologies, and enhancing capacity-building initiatives for clean energy development.
