Philippine claims in West Philippine Sea must be strongly supported by an informed and united public, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) emphasized during a public engagement in Cagayan de Oro.
PCG spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea Commodore Jay Tarriela stressed that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s current policy on the WPS could outlast his term if Filipinos remain steadfast and knowledgeable about the nation’s sovereign rights.
He explained that the country’s fight for its maritime territory is not confined to this generation but is an intergenerational endeavor that demands long-term public vigilance.
Tarriela highlighted that ensuring the continuity of this critical effort requires a deep understanding of the legal and historical foundations behind the Philippines’ maritime claims.
His visit to Cagayan de Oro was part of a broader government initiative aimed at strengthening public awareness and understanding of the nation’s rightful claims over the WPS.
The PCG reiterated its commitment to engaging communities nationwide to help cultivate a united front in defending Philippine sovereignty.
