The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) announced it will deploy two ships to ensure the safety of the “Atin Ito” coalition during its third civilian-led mission to the West Philippine Sea (WPS) from May 26 to 30, 2025.
Commodore Jay Tarriela, PCG spokesperson for WPS affairs, confirmed that a 97-meter and a 44-meter vessel will be dispatched to provide maritime security even though the initiative is spearheaded by civilians.
This move follows a recent incident at Pag-asa Island where a Chinese Coast Guard vessel twice used a water cannon against BRP Datu Sanday, which was conducting a marine research operation.
Despite ongoing maritime tensions, National Maritime Council spokesperson Alexander Lopez affirmed that they continue to encourage the “Atin Ito” coalition to proceed with its advocacy and assured that contingency plans are in place should any conflict arise.
As part of the mission, a peace concert featuring renowned Filipino and international artists will be held in Palawan, symbolizing unity and defiance amid increasing regional pressure.
