PBBM, Malaysian PM Anwar Ibrahim Discuss ASEAN Economy, Security Ahead of 2025 Summit

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim personally called President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to discuss key economic and security issues affecting the ASEAN regio

During their phone conversation, the two leaders tackled topics in preparation for the upcoming Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit, which Malaysia is set to host from May 26 to May 27, 2025.

President Marcos shared that their discussion centered on the ongoing challenges to regional economic stability and security within Southeast Asia.

In a social media post, Prime Minister Anwar stated that he initiated the call with President Marcos and emphasized Malaysia’s commitment to extending the ceasefire in Myanmar to ensure the continuous delivery of humanitarian aid.

The two leaders agreed that any assistance to Myanmar must be delivered without discrimination or restrictions.

They also addressed the lingering impact of tariffs imposed by former U.S. President Donald Trump, which continue to influence regional trade dynamics.

President Marcos expressed hope that these important dialogues would continue with other ASEAN leaders during the summit in Kuala Lumpur later this month.

Prime Minister Anwar also extended his congratulations to President Marcos on the successful conduct of the May 12 midterm elections in the Philippines.
