A mother and her daughter died while more than 1,000 families were affected by heavy flooding and landslides across four provinces in the Soccsksargen Region, according to the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Region 12.
OCD spokesperson Jorie Mae Balmediano told Bombo Radyo Koronadal that at least 1,122 families have been impacted by severe weather in the municipalities of Carmen in Cotabato, Lebak and Kalamansig in Sultan Kudarat, Tantangan and Sto. Niño in South Cotabato, and Malapatan in Sarangani.
The confirmed fatalities were identified as 34-year-old Maila Juanito Manansala Pulido and her 12-year-old daughter, Mylene, who were swept away by strong flash flood currents while attempting to evacuate from Sitio Kitay, Barangay Salaman, Lebak, Sultan Kudarat.
Authorities are still verifying reports of additional casualties, including a couple who were washed away after swimming at a waterfall in Barangay Cacub, Koronadal City, and other victims in Kalamansig, Sultan Kudarat and Sarangani Province.
Infrastructure damages were also reported, with several roads in Cotabato Province and Sultan Kudarat currently impassable due to flood destruction.
Assessment is ongoing to determine the full extent of damage to agriculture and livelihood in the affected areas.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has already distributed food packs and sleeping kits, while OCD continues to coordinate with local government units for further assistance.
Balmediano urged residents to remain alert and evacuate immediately when heavy rains or landslide warnings occur to ensure their safety.
