THE legendary band Aegis confirmed on Monday that Mercy Sunot, its lead singer, had died.
“It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of Mercy, one of the beloved vocalists of AEGIS Band. She bravely fought her battle with cancer but has now found peace and rest,” Aegis stated on its Facebook page.
“Mercy’s voice wasn’t just a part of AEGIS—it was a voice that brought comfort, joy, and strength to so many. She has touched countless lives, inspiring fans and lifting spirits with every song she sang. Her passion, warmth, and unforgettable presence on stage will forever be cherished in our hearts,” said the statement.
Mercy was receiving treatment for Stage 3 lung and breast cancer in California, USA.
Mercy said in her previous Tiktok video that she had lung surgery and was in intensive care after experiencing trouble breathing.
“My lung surgery is over. But suddenly I had difficulty breathing, so I was taken to the ICU. There is water, there is inflammation in my lungs, so they are working on a way,” she replied.
She said in the same Tiktok video that physicians administered drugs to assist her breathing.
“Please pray for me so that this ordeal is over,” Mercy pleaded in tears as she lay in her hospital bed.
Mercy went to see legendary vocalist Eva Eugenio perform in Hayward, California, on November 8. Mercy was not a part of the event, but as the concert ended, the audience asked her to sing a few songs as a special treat, after which she received gifts.
At the time, she informed one media outlet that she had been in the US for seven months and was doing well with her chemotherapy. She also claimed that she was scheduled for a lung procedure on November 12.
Mercy requested a flight return to the Philippines on November 16, according to a friend in California, but was denied due to her poor state. She died the following day as a result of multiple organ failure.
Aegis has a number of karaoke and videoke hits, including “Halik,” “Basang-basa sa Ulan,” and “Luha.”
Mercy, as well as her sisters Juliet and Kris Sunot, sing for the band.
