MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has granted a four-month extension to the term of Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil, the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) announced on Thursday.

The extension will take effect on February 7, which was originally Marbil’s scheduled retirement date.

According to the PCO, a memorandum dated February 4, 2025, and signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin confirmed the President’s approval of Marbil’s continued service beyond the mandatory retirement age of 56.

The document was addressed to Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla.

During a press briefing on January 21, Remulla stated that the extension would not create any issues within the PNP.

“The extension is at most six months, so I don’t see any problem. Institutional stability is more important, especially during elections,” he said.
