A man who constructed a bridge to facilitate easier and faster travel for residents in Zhenlin village, a remote area in Jilin province, has been sentenced to two years in prison.

Instead of being thanked or honored for his efforts to improve the lives of local residents, Huang Deyi faced punishment for his actions.

For a long time, complaints had been made by villagers about the difficulty of crossing to the other side of the river, where they had to take a lengthy detour to reach their destination. The government had not provided any assistance.

In response to these challenges, Huang Deyi decided to build a pontoon bridge using connected boats with a covering tarp, which significantly improved travel for the villagers.

The bridge provided relief to the community by allowing them to cross more easily, reducing the time and expense of travel compared to longer routes.

A small fee was charged for each crossing, which was much lower than the fares for longer trips.

To accommodate light vehicles such as motorcycles and bicycles, Deyi enhanced the bridge using stronger materials.

However, after a few years, the Taonan Water Affairs Bureau discovered Deyi’s unauthorized construction and ordered the dismantling of the bridge. He was accused of illegal activity.

Consequently, efforts were made to dismantle the bridge, leading to Deyi’s prosecution and subsequent two-year prison sentence, which has returned the villagers to their previous hardships.
