MANILA — Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Juan Ponce Enrile remains alive but in critical condition, according to his family.
In a Facebook post on Tuesday night, columnist Ramon Tulfo cited information from Enrile’s son, former congressman Jack Enrile, who confirmed that the elder Enrile was still alive as of 9 p.m. in an undisclosed hospital but warned that “his father may go anytime soon.”
Official records list Enrile’s birthdate as February 14, 1924, making him 101 years old. However, documents from the Aglipayan Church in Cagayan indicate he was born on June 22, 1922, two years earlier, which would make him 103.
The longtime statesman, who was baptized as Juanito Furagganan in the Iglesia Filipina Independiente, has been serving as Chief Presidential Legal Counsel under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
Earlier, Senator Jinggoy Estrada informed his colleagues that Enrile was confined in the intensive care unit due to pneumonia. The senator’s source, however, said the former Senate president has “slim chances of surviving.”
