Senator Jinggoy Estrada announced during Monday’s Senate session that Chief Presidential Legal Counsel and former Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile is currently confined in the intensive care unit (ICU) due to pneumonia.

Estrada appealed for prayers for Enrile’s recovery, noting his legacy as one of the longest-serving officials in Philippine political history.

The senator did not disclose the hospital where the 101-year-old statesman is admitted.

Enrile, who last served as Chief Presidential Legal Counsel under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., remains closely monitored by the public because of his advanced age and long career in government service.

Juan Ponce Enrile’s public service career spans decades, beginning as a protégé of Ferdinand Marcos Sr. during the Martial Law era. He served as Minister of Defense from 1972 to 1986, playing a pivotal role in the declaration and enforcement of Martial Law.

Enrile later became a key figure in the 1986 People Power Revolution, breaking away from Marcos Sr. and joining forces with reformist military leaders.

He went on to serve multiple terms as senator, holding the position of Senate President from 2008 to 2013.

Throughout his career, Enrile was involved in landmark legislation, including laws on energy, taxation, and national defense, while also facing controversies such as the pork barrel scam and Martial Law abuses.

Despite these controversies, Enrile remained a prominent figure in Philippine politics, earning the reputation of a political survivor who adapted to shifting administrations and eras.
