The International Criminal Court (ICC) has expressed openness to the possible return of the Philippines as a member state of the tribunal.

ICC spokesperson Dr. Fadi El Abdallah emphasized that all countries wishing to join or rejoin the ICC are welcome, as this signifies a collective global commitment to uphold justice and accountability.

Dr. El Abdallah cited the global issue of impunity, where powerful individuals evade punishment for heinous crimes committed around the world.

He noted that impunity remains a global challenge, with numerous obstacles hindering the pursuit of justice.

According to him, the only way to effectively address this issue is through the cooperation of all nations, including the Philippines.

When asked if the ICC has received any formal communication or indication from the Philippine government regarding its possible return, Dr. El Abdallah clarified that he does not have access to behind-the-scenes discussions and could not confirm any developments.

In November last year, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. revealed that the government was reconsidering the country’s possible re-entry into the ICC.

The House of Representatives had also filed a resolution urging President Marcos to cooperate with the ICC, despite the Philippines’ earlier withdrawal during the administration of former President Rodrigo Duterte.
