La Castellana town remains vigilant for potential lahar flows from Kanlaon Volcano in several barangays.

Barangay Biak-na-bato and Cabacungan are among those being monitored.

According to La Castellana Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office Head John de Asis in an interview with Bombo Radyo Bacolod, these barangays were affected by the lahar flow during the volcano’s eruption in June.

De Asis explained that forced evacuations have been carried out within the 6km radius danger zone, including residents of Brgy Cabacungan, located 300 to 500 meters outside the radius.

These residents, along with most livestock, were evacuated before Phivolcs issued a lahar advisory.

With no residents remaining in the danger zone, De Asis acknowledged their responsibility for any incidents affecting abandoned properties, such as potential theft.

In addition to securing the danger zone, police have established border checkpoints to strictly prevent entry into the 6km radius.

While acknowledging unavoidable humanitarian considerations, De Asis assured that individuals entering the zone are logged to facilitate investigations in case of theft.

Despite some complaints regarding the strict regulations, De Asis emphasized that these measures are for the safety of evacuees’ belongings.

While the situation on the volcano slopes cannot be directly monitored due to the absence of personnel, making it difficult to predict lahar flow occurrences, they are preparing for any eventuality, with the absence of residents being a significant safety factor.
