MANILA — The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Thursday confirmed the death of a second Filipino in the aftermath of the 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar late last month.
According to the DFA, the Philippine Embassy in Yangon received official confirmation nearly two weeks after the powerful quake that the remains of another Filipino national had been positively identified.
“The family of the deceased Filipino has been informed. They have requested media to respect their privacy in this very difficult time,” the DFA said in a statement.
The department added that no further information will be disclosed in deference to the family’s request.
Meanwhile, the DFA said it remains hopeful for the safe whereabouts of the two other Filipinos still unaccounted for in Mandalay.
Just a day earlier, the agency reported the first confirmed Filipino fatality from the March 28 quake. Though the DFA did not release the name of the individual, the victim was later identified by his brother, Alvin Aragon, as Francis Aragon—a teacher based in Myanmar.
Francis, 38, was among four Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) teaching in Mandalay, near the earthquake’s epicenter in Sagaing Region, who were initially reported missing.
