The Department of Education (DepEd) announced that college may be shortened by one semester under the proposed changes to the new senior high curriculum.
According to DepEd Assistant Secretary Janir Datukan, up to 24 units of general education subjects could be removed from college by aligning them with five existing core subjects in senior high school, while three subjects may be entirely eliminated.
This move follows consultations between DepEd, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) as part of a House panel investigation into the revised curriculum.
Educators and students have long acknowledged a disconnect between senior high school and college, especially as some universities still impose bridging programs.
The House of Representatives aims to reduce the length of college education and eliminate redundant coursework for senior high school graduates.
While there is no confirmed timeline for nationwide implementation, some selected schools are expected to adopt the revised curriculum starting June.
