Colombian presidential candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay, 39, is in critical condition after being shot three times during a campaign rally in Bogotá2.
Reports indicate that Turbay sustained two gunshot wounds to the head and one to the knee.
Authorities immediately arrested a 15-year-old suspect at the scene of the attack.
The shooting occurred while Turbay was delivering a speech at a public park.
His wife, Maria Claudia Tarazona, expressed deep sorrow and urged the public to pray for his recovery.
Turbay is currently receiving medical treatment at Santa Fe Clinic, where supporters have gathered for a prayer vigil.
His political party and the Colombian government strongly condemned the attack, calling it an assault on the country’s democracy.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also denounced the incident.
Turbay comes from a prominent political family in Colombia, with his mother, journalist Diana Turbay, having been killed in 1991 after being kidnapped by Pablo Escobar’s Medellín cartel.
