House Deputy Minority Leader and ACT Teachers Party-list Representative France Castro has called for a comprehensive investigation into the alleged anomalies within the Department of Education (DepEd) under the leadership of Vice President Sara Duterte.
Castro’s request follows revelations from former and current DepEd officials who claimed to have received cash envelopes from Duterte and questioned the use of confidential funds.
“The allegations of cash gifts and misuse of funds at DepEd are deeply troubling and demand a thorough investigation. It is crucial to uphold integrity and transparency in our education system, which is fundamental to the development of our youth,” Castro said.
Gloria Mercado, a former DepEd official, revealed that she received a monthly envelope containing P50,000 while serving as the Head of Procuring Entity (HoPE) of DepEd.
Former DepEd Bids and Awards Committee (BAC) Chairperson Resty Osias also confirmed receiving envelopes with amounts ranging from P12,000 to P15,000.
Castro expressed concern that the education sector is already facing major challenges, such as the long-standing classroom shortage, and that the alleged corruption further jeopardizes the quality of education for Filipino students.
She urged her fellow lawmakers to support the proposed investigation, stressing the need for accountability from the Vice President.
The Makabayan bloc lawmaker emphasized the importance of unity among legislators in holding Duterte accountable for the alleged misconduct.
