The Department of Education (DepEd) is seeking over PHP 5.072 billion to rehabilitate schools nationwide that have sustained damage from recent typhoons and the intensified southwest monsoon, known locally as “habagat.”
This substantial funding is crucial for addressing the widespread destruction across various regions, a recurring challenge for the Philippine education system due to the country’s high vulnerability to natural disasters.
According to DepEd, an initial assessment identified 476 schools across different parts of the country that suffered significant damage.
A portion of the requested amount, approximately PHP 1.013 billion, is specifically earmarked for the major repair and reconstruction of 624 schools.
The DepEd Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Service (DRRMS) further detailed that nearly PHP 277.34 million is needed for minor repairs on an additional 1,444 schools.
Moreover, PHP 46.983 million has been allocated for essential cleaning and clearing operations to make affected school premises safe and functional once more.
The DRRMS continues its close coordination with field offices, diligently monitoring the impacts of these weather disturbances to ensure the prompt restoration of all affected educational facilities.
