MANILA, Philippines — Former president Rodrigo Duterte has reportedly collapsed twice while in detention in The Hague, according to his legal counsel, Nicholas Kaufman.

Kaufman said Duterte is experiencing severe short-term memory loss, although his long-term memory remains intact.

“He is frail and has collapsed twice while in detention. His condition must be handled with respect and caution,” Kaufman said.

The defense lawyer disclosed that a separate medical report has been submitted to bolster their request for Duterte’s interim release.

This came after the court earlier rejected claims regarding the former leader’s physical and cognitive vulnerabilities.

Kaufman added that Duterte’s health condition has been extensively documented, citing age-related illnesses and neurological issues.

While the former president can still recall long-term events, his impaired short-term memory has reportedly affected his ability to consistently instruct his legal team.

“He is considerably weaker, frailer, and grayer. We are not presenting him publicly just for demonstration,” Kaufman said, referring to the upcoming proceedings at the International Criminal Court.

The ICC is set to open hearings to determine whether Duterte will stand trial for alleged crimes against humanity linked to his administration’s controversial anti-drug campaign.
