THE International Criminal Court (ICC) confirmed Monday that it has taken into custody a Libyan militia official accused of overseeing murder, torture, and rape at the infamous Mitiga prison near Tripoli.

Khaled Mohamed Ali El Hishri, arrested in Germany in July, has been transferred to the ICC detention center in The Hague, where he will await his initial appearance before judges.

According to the ICC, El Hishri faces charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity tied to his alleged role as a senior official at Mitiga prison, where “thousands were detained for extended periods.”

The court said his first appearance will be scheduled at a later date.

German outlet Der Spiegel earlier reported that El Hishri was apprehended at Berlin airport in July while attempting to board a flight to Tunis. He remained in German custody pending the completion of legal processes before his handover to the ICC.

Libya continues to struggle with instability more than a decade after the 2011 NATO-backed uprising that toppled longtime ruler Moamer Kadhafi.

The country is still split between a UN-recognized administration in the west and a rival eastern authority supported by military commander Khalifa Haftar.
