More than 8,300 people were evacuated in Taiwan as Typhoon Fung-Wong, locally known as Super Typhoon Uwan, brought heavy rains and flooding to parts of the country.

The typhoon had earlier devastated the Philippines, leaving widespread destruction across Luzon, where landslides, floods, toppled power lines, and damaged schools displaced millions of residents. At least 1.3 million people were evacuated nationwide, with dozens of casualties reported.

Although the storm weakened after battering the Philippines, it still unleashed torrential rains along Taiwan’s mountainous eastern coast, causing severe flooding in several areas.

Floodwaters in Yilan County reportedly reached neck-deep levels, prompting soldiers to conduct rescue operations for stranded residents.

In Suao township, more than 1,000 homes were submerged after the area recorded 648 millimeters of rainfall.

Residents said the water rose rapidly, overwhelming drainage systems that could not handle the volume of rain.

Authorities continue to monitor affected areas as rescue and relief operations are underway to ensure the safety of evacuees.
