Typhoon Uwan weakens over West Philippine Sea; Signal No. 3 still up in 3 Northern Luzon areas

MANILA, Philippines — Typhoon Uwan (international name: Fung-Wong) has weakened over the West Philippine Sea as of Monday morning, while Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 3 remains in effect in three areas of Northern Luzon, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) reported.

In its 11 a.m. advisory, Pagasa said Uwan now has maximum sustained winds of 130 kilometers per hour (kph) and gusts reaching 160 kph, a reduction of 20 kph from earlier reports. The typhoon is moving west-northwest at 20 kph, located about 135 kilometers west-northwest of Bacnotan, La Union.

Areas under Signal No. 3 include Ilocos Sur
Northern and central La Union: Luna, Caba, Santol, Bauang, City of San Fernando, San Juan, Bagulin, Aringay, Bangar, San Gabriel, Burgos, Naguilian, Agoo, Bacnotan, Sudipen, Balaoan
Northwestern Pangasinan: Bolinao, Bani, Agno, City of Alaminos, Anda

Areas under Signal No. 2 include Batanes, Cagayan (including Babuyan Islands), Isabela, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, Apayao, Abra, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Ifugao, Benguet, Ilocos Norte, the rest of La Union and Pangasinan, Aurora, Zambales, Bataan, Nueva Ecija, Tarlac, Pampanga, and Bulacan.

Areas under Signal No. 1 cover most of Luzon, Metro Manila, and parts of Visayas, including Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, northern Palawan, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, Masbate, Aklan, Capiz, and Antique.

Pagasa said Uwan will follow a recurving path, turning northwestward on Monday, northward on Tuesday, and northeastward in the following days. During this recurving, the typhoon is expected to briefly re-intensify as it approaches southwest Taiwan.

From Wednesday onwards, Uwan is forecast to weaken into a severe tropical storm and eventually downgrade into a low-pressure area by Friday.
