Thousands Affected as Typhoon Uwan Traverses Northern Luzon

Typhoon Uwan (international name Fung-Wong) weakened further early Monday morning as it moved over the coastal waters of Bacnotan, La Union, but continues to bring destructive winds, heavy rains, and storm surges across Luzon and parts of the Visayas.

According to PAGASA, the typhoon’s center was located at 4:00 AM over La Union, with maximum sustained winds of 150 km/h, gustiness of up to 230 km/h, and central pressure of 955 hPa.

Uwan is moving west northwestward at 25 km/h, with strong to typhoon-force winds extending outward up to 780 km from the center.

Areas Under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signals (TCWS):

TCWS No. 4 (Typhoon-force winds, 118–184 km/h): Western Nueva Vizcaya, southwestern Kalinga, western Mountain Province, southern Abra, western Ifugao, Benguet, central and southern Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, northern Nueva Ecija, northern Tarlac, and northern Zambales.

TCWS No. 3 (Storm-force winds, 89–117 km/h): Southwestern mainland Cagayan, western Isabela, southern Apayao, the rest of Kalinga, Ifugao, Abra, Mountain Province, Quirino, southern Ilocos Norte, the rest of Ilocos Sur, Nueva Vizcaya, Nueva Ecija, northern and central Aurora, western Bulacan, Pampanga, the rest of Tarlac, the rest of Zambales, and northern Bataan.

TCWS No. 2 (Gale-force winds, 62–88 km/h): The rest of mainland Cagayan including Babuyan Islands, the rest of Isabela, Apayao, Ilocos Norte, Aurora, Bulacan, Bataan, Quezon including Polillo Islands, Metro Manila, Rizal, Laguna, Cavite, Batangas, Marinduque, northern Oriental Mindoro, northern and central Occidental Mindoro including Lubang Islands, Camarines Norte, and northwestern Camarines Sur.

TCWS No. 1 (Strong winds, 39–61 km/h): Batanes, northern Palawan including Calamian, Cuyo, and Cagayancillo Islands, the rest of Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, Masbate, Romblon, the rest of Oriental and Occidental Mindoro, Northern Samar, northwestern Samar, Iloilo, Capiz, Aklan, and Antique including Caluya Islands.

Forecast Track

PAGASA said Uwan will continue moving west northwestward over the West Philippine Sea in the next 12 hours. The typhoon is forecast to re-intensify between November 11 and 12 before turning northeastward toward the Taiwan Strait.

By Thursday, November 13, Uwan is expected to make landfall over western Taiwan, where it will weaken rapidly before emerging near the Ryukyu Islands as a remnant low.

Authorities urged residents in high-risk areas to remain vigilant, follow evacuation orders, and monitor updates from PAGASA regional services.
