Super Typhoon Uwan Leaves One Dead, Over 1.1 Million Evacuated Across Luzon and Visayas

One person was confirmed dead in the Bicol Region as Super Typhoon Uwan (international name: Fung-wong) continues to lash the Philippines, according to the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) on Sunday.

The victim, identified as a resident of Viga, Catanduanes, reportedly drowned due to widespread flooding, although OCD clarified the report is still subject to verification.

Nationwide, a total of 1,179,086 individuals or 344,413 families have undergone preemptive evacuation across the regions of Cordillera, Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Metro Manila, Bicol, Western Visayas, Central Visayas, and Eastern Visayas.

The Bicol Region recorded the highest number of evacuees with 671,254 individuals or 196,462 families, followed by Eastern Visayas with 259,145 individuals or 71,692 families.

As of Sunday evening, six provinces remain under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 5, the highest warning level issued by PAGASA.

According to PAGASA’s latest advisory, Super Typhoon Uwan was last tracked near Aurora province, packing maximum sustained winds of 185 kilometers per hour and gusts reaching 230 kph, with storm surges expected to rise over three meters in coastal areas.

Authorities warned of life-threatening floods and landslides, urging residents in high-risk areas to remain in evacuation centers and avoid returning home until conditions improve.

Government agencies remain on full alert, with relief operations and emergency protocols activated nationwide to address the needs of displaced families.
