The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has confirmed that it is continuously monitoring over 200 Chinese vessels in the West Philippine Sea.

This represents the highest number of Chinese vessels observed in the area to date.

Data gathered from August to September 2 shows a presence of 165 Chinese maritime militia vessels, 24 China Coast Guard vessels, 12 People’s Liberation Army Navy ships, and two research vessels.

Most of these vessels have been spotted near Escoda Shoal, where incidents of harassment against Philippine vessels, such as the BRP Teresa Magbanua and BRP Datu Sanday, have been reported.

The AFP has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the country’s territory and sovereignty.

The escalating tensions between the Philippines and China stem from China’s persistent and expansive claims in the West Philippine Sea.

It is worth noting that an international arbitration tribunal ruled in favor of the Philippines in 2016, affirming the country’s sovereign rights over the disputed territories.
