Typhoon Tino cuts power to 5 transmission lines in Visayas and Mindanao

MANILA — Five transmission lines in the Visayas and Mindanao were reported unavailable due to Typhoon Tino (international name: Kalmaegi), the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) said on Tuesday.

Affected lines include:

  • Maasin-Baybay 69kV Line, which serves the Leyte IV Electric Cooperative Inc. (LEYECO IV).
  • Ormoc-San Isidro 69kV Line, supplying the Don Orestes Romualdez Electric Cooperative, Inc. (DORECO) in Tolosa, Leyte, as well as Southern Leyte Electric Cooperative Inc. (SOLECO), LEYECO III, and LEYECO V.
  • Ormoc-Baybay 69kV Line, servicing LEYECO IV and LEYECO V.
  • Maasin-San Isidro 69kV Line, servicing SOLECO.
  • Placer-Madrid 69kV Line, which supplies Surigao del Norte Electric Cooperative (SURNECO), Siargao Electric Cooperative (SIARELCO), and Surigao del Sur II Electric Cooperative (SURSECO II).

NGCP also reported that one 38kV line and one 350kV line are currently unavailable, though details on the areas served were not provided.

The power operator assured consumers that line crews have been mobilized and are conducting patrols, with simultaneous restoration activities ongoing in areas that are already accessible.

According to PAGASA’s 5 a.m. bulletin, the eye of Typhoon Tino was last located over the coastal waters of San Francisco, Cebu, moving westward at 25 km/h, with maximum sustained winds of 150 km/h and gusts reaching up to 205 km/h.

The power outages affect several electric cooperatives across Leyte, Southern Leyte, Surigao del Norte, Siargao, and Surigao del Sur, highlighting the storm’s widespread impact on critical infrastructure.
