Since last week, Baguio has experienced persistent heavy rains, prompting the cancellation of several classes.

Initially, the local government suspended classes only from preschool to Grade 6 on Monday.

By 12:59 p.m., the City Information Office extended the suspension to include senior high school due to the intensifying southwest monsoon.

Later that evening, reports of the student’s death began circulating online, sparking widespread concern.

Preliminary accounts suggest the student slipped on the rain-slick road and fell into the canal.

The body of the student—identified as a public school learner from Guisad—was discovered by a resident while clearing drainage to reduce water levels.

The resident sought help from a security personnel of the Bureau of Plant and Industry to retrieve the victim.

Rescuers attempted to save the student, but the child was declared dead at the scene.

According to the investigation, the incident likely occurred around 1:00 p.m., shortly after classes for secondary students were suspended.
