Authorities have arrested the fourth and final suspect in the brutal killing and robbery of 19-year-old UP Diliman student Sophie Marie Coquilla in Tagum City, Davao del Norte.
The suspect, also 19 years old, was apprehended Sunday in Barangay Agdao Proper, Davao City.
Police recovered a .38-caliber firearm with two live rounds from the suspect during the arrest.
The three other suspects, previously detained, were identified as minors and were involved in entering Coquilla’s residence on July 9, 2025, where she suffered 38 stab wounds to her body and neck.
Items stolen from the victim were recovered from two of the apprehended minors.
CCTV footage from a neighbor captured all four suspects loitering near the Coquilla home prior to the crime.
The three minors have been charged with robbery with homicide following their initial arrest.
According to the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), the minors admitted knowledge of their crime—a key element for prosecution under the law.
Despite the confession, one 14-year-old suspect cannot be formally charged due to protection under the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act (RA 9344).
The minor suspects remain under custody of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) until they reach legal age for formal prosecution.
This case has sparked renewed calls among lawmakers to amend the juvenile justice law and lower the minimum age of criminal responsibility.
