Chinese Ambassador Huang Xilian has called for renewed dialogue between China and the Philippines, urging both nations to prioritize cooperation over conflict.

Huang made the statement during the 50th anniversary celebration of diplomatic relations between the two countries on Saturday, June 7.

The event was attended by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., senators, business leaders, and representatives from the Filipino-Chinese community.

Despite the call for dialogue, tensions in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) persist, with China repeatedly violating the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and refusing to recognize the 2016 arbitral ruling favoring the Philippines.

Under the administration of President Marcos Jr., the Philippines has taken a firmer stance in defending its sovereignty, as Chinese vessels continue to maintain a presence and use water cannons against Filipino fishermen.

Huang emphasized that China and the Philippines are close neighbors that cannot be separated, expressing hope that more Filipinos will support efforts to improve bilateral relations.

Meanwhile, Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. questioned China’s sincerity in pursuing dialogue, citing its continued militarization of disputed territories.
