DOH Confirms Face Masks Are Ineffective Against Mpox Transmission

The Department of Health (DOH) has clarified that wearing face masks does not effectively prevent monkeypox (Mpox) transmission.

DOH spokesperson Dr. Albert Domingo explained that Mpox is not airborne, meaning face masks are not the primary form of protection against the virus.

Domingo emphasized that avoiding physical contact, such as kissing and hugging, is a more effective way to prevent infection.

Mpox spreads through skin-to-skin contact, including kissing, hugging, and close interactions, even without sexual activity.

Despite the rising number of Mpox cases, the DOH noted that the current Clade II strain in the Philippines is milder and less contagious compared to Clade 1b, which is more transmissible.

The DOH also dismissed false information regarding an Mpox-related lockdown, assuring the public that no such restrictions have been imposed.
