46th ASEAN Summit Opens in Malaysia as PM Anwar Pushes for US-ASEAN Meeting

The 46th ASEAN Summit officially opened today, May 21, 2025, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, gathering leaders from Southeast Asian nations to discuss pressing regional and global issues.

The formal arrival of ASEAN leaders began at exactly 8:30 AM, where each head of state was welcomed by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim during a ceremonial reception followed by the opening of the plenary session.

Key agenda items of the summit include regional and global challenges such as developments in the South China Sea, the crisis in Myanmar, maritime security, climate change, economic instability, and digital disruption.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. earlier stated that he would advocate for the acceleration of negotiations on the Code of Conduct in the West Philippine Sea and the establishment of an ethical and responsible regional Artificial Intelligence (AI) framework.

In his opening remarks, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim warmly welcomed the ASEAN leaders, highlighting their presence as a testament to their commitment to the regional bloc.

Ibrahim underscored the ASEAN Summit’s importance in strengthening the region’s resilience and fostering inclusive growth amidst global uncertainties.

He also expressed satisfaction over ASEAN unity and emphasized the significance of the inaugural ASEAN-GCC-China Summit aimed at deepening multilateral partnerships and enhancing a sustainable geoeconomic model.

Additionally, Anwar revealed he had written to U.S. President Donald Trump requesting the convening of a US-ASEAN meeting in response to recently imposed American tariffs, emphasizing the need for continued diplomatic engagement between ASEAN and the United States.
