Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle has been officially appointed as the new Bishop of the Diocese of Albano in Rome, further strengthening his growing pastoral and administrative role within the Catholic Church in Italy.

The announcement was released by the Vatican on Tuesday, marking another significant milestone in the ecclesiastical career of the former Archbishop of Manila.

Although Cardinal Tagle has held prominent Vatican positions since 2019—including his role as Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization—this new appointment affirms his continuing pastoral responsibilities at the diocesan level.

The Diocese of Albano is one of the suburbicarian dioceses traditionally assigned to cardinals in the Roman Curia, and this appointment symbolizes both honor and increased leadership within the Italian Church hierarchy.

Cardinal Tagle, known globally for his humble demeanor and deep theological insights, succeeds Bishop Marcello Semeraro, who previously served the Diocese before being appointed Prefect of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints in 2020.

The Filipino cardinal remains one of the most influential Asian voices in the Catholic Church, and his new role is seen as part of Pope Francis’ broader effort to globalize Church leadership.

A formal installation ceremony is expected to take place in the coming weeks, with Church leaders and faithful from both Italy and the Philippines expected to attend.
