The United States deployed an aircraft carrier strike group to Philippine waters just days after Chinese naval vessels, including an aircraft carrier, were spotted near the region.
According to the US Navy, the Nimitz Carrier Strike Group, led by its flagship USS Nimitz (CVN 68), is currently operating in Philippine waters following a scheduled port visit to Guam.
This deployment underscores the operational readiness of the Nimitz group and reinforces the US Navy’s commitment to ensuring a free, secure, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.
Carrier Strike Group 11 Commander Rear Admiral Maximilian Clark stated that operations in the area enhance the group’s capabilities, ensuring persistent and capable naval forces ready to provide a wide range of military responses to any crisis or contingency.
In addition to the USS Nimitz, the strike group includes Carrier Air Wing 17 and Destroyer Squadron 9, which comprises the USS Gridley (DDG-101), USS Lenah Sutcliffe Higbee (DDG-123), USS Curtis Wilbur (DDG-54), and USS Wayne E. Meyer (DDG-108).
These vessels are currently operating under the US 7th Fleet, the Navy’s largest forward-deployed numbered fleet, tasked with overseeing operations in the Indo-Pacific.
The deployment follows confirmation from the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) that the Chinese aircraft carrier Shandong, along with eight escort vessels, was recently spotted en route to the Philippine Sea.
