The widow of slain Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo has expressed disappointment over the recent decision of the Timor-Leste court to reject the Philippine government’s request to repatriate expelled Representative Arnolfo “Arnie” Teves Jr., the alleged mastermind behind Degamo’s murder.

In a statement posted on her social media account on Friday, Pamplona, Negros Oriental Mayor Janice Degamo described the decision as “kakaiba at mahirap maintindihan” (unusual and difficult to understand).

She also raised concerns that the Timor-Leste court might have been influenced by power and connections.

“Hindi natin maiwasang isipin na maaaring naabot din ng ilang tao ang korte sa Timor Leste” (We cannot help but think that some individuals may have reached out to the court in Timor-Leste), Janice said, though she did not mention any names.

Teves’ lawyer, Atty. Ferdinand Topacio, earlier announced that the Philippines’ extradition request had been denied.

Under the Constitution of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, extradition is prohibited if there is a “clear risk of torture, inhuman, or cruel treatment.”

The decision surprised the Department of Justice (DOJ), which stressed that Teves faces serious charges, including multiple murder allegations, and must be brought back to the Philippines to face the full extent of the law.

Despite the ruling, Janice Degamo remains hopeful that Teves will eventually be returned to the country.

She is also set to meet with Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin “Boying” Remulla next week to discuss the latest developments and the government’s plans regarding Teves’ extradition.
