The Muntinlupa City court has dismissed an appeal that sought to challenge the exclusion of former Senator Leila De Lima from an illegal drug case.
In a decision issued by the Muntinlupa City Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 206, the motion filed by the prosecutor to overturn De Lima’s acquittal was rejected.
The prosecution alleged that the court committed grave abuse of discretion in its ruling.
However, the decision, signed by Presiding Judge Gener Gito, stated that the court did not commit any grave abuse of discretion.
It can be recalled that last June, the RTC dismissed the third and final drug case filed against De Lima due to insufficient evidence.
This decision is similar to a motion filed by De Lima in 2021 regarding another drug case in a separate Muntinlupa court, which was also approved.
Former Senator Leila De Lima has been a prominent figure in Philippine politics, particularly known for her strong stance against human rights violations and corruption.
She was arrested in 2017 on charges related to illegal drug trading, which she has consistently denied, claiming the charges were politically motivated. Over the years, De Lima faced multiple legal battles, with various courts handling her cases.
Despite being detained, she continued to advocate for justice and human rights. The recent court decisions, including the dismissal of her third and final drug case, mark a significant turn in her legal journey.
