The Department of Health (DOH) – Ilocos Region has launched a “simultaneous breastfeeding” initiative in La Union to promote and strengthen the tradition and importance of breastfeeding as a vital practice for infant care.

The program is part of the observance of National Breastfeeding Month this August.

According to Dr. Rheuel Bobis, Medical Officer IV, the program aims to educate mothers on the importance of exclusive breastfeeding using their own milk during the first six months of their baby’s life.

“We aim to highlight the benefits and significance of exclusive breastfeeding and the health benefits and nutrition it provides for the development of the infant’s immunity,” he stated.

Dr. Bobis also encouraged local governments in various provinces to organize simultaneous breastfeeding events to further enhance and ensure the healthy growth of infants.

The first “simultaneous breastfeeding” event was held in Aringay, La Union, during the second week of August, attended by 50 mothers.

The activity was also conducted in Naguilian, La Union, last week.

Regional Director Paula Paz M. Sydiongco reminded mothers that no powdered milk or infant formula can match the nutrients in breast milk, which is essential for an infant’s healthy development.

“Exclusive breastfeeding strengthens the emotional bond between mother and child and helps reduce social and behavioral problems in both children and adults. It also helps build an infant’s trust and shape early behavior,” Dr. Sydiongco explained.
