Cabagan-Sta. Maria Bridge collapses at around 8 p.m. last night, despite being newly completed and barely used by the public before the incident.
The bridge featured an arched design intended not only for aesthetics but also to reinforce structural integrity for the safety of motorists.
According to Isabela Governor Rodito Albano, the collapse occurred on the Cabagan side of the bridge after two dump trucks crossed simultaneously.
Rescue teams were able to save a motorcycle rider who was caught in the collapse, and the victim was immediately rushed to a hospital for treatment.
The bridge was officially opened to motorists in February, following retrofitting by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and its contractors after structural movement was detected.
Governor Albano noted that the bridge was considered iconic due to its arched design, which might have contributed to the collapse due to its weight.
The 720-meter bridge was constructed to connect the towns of Cabagan and Sta. Maria, with a budget allocation of PHP 639.6 million.
DPWH Region 2 explained that the construction took longer than expected, as they had to consult experts after determining that the original design was not suitable for the bridge’s structure.
