The suspects were arrested for violating the Espionage Act after allegedly conducting surveillance in key government and military installations.

According to the suspects, they were hired by a Chinese national identified as Ni Qinhui to monitor Villamor Airbase, Camp Aguinaldo, Malacañang, Camp Crame, and the U.S. Embassy in exchange for daily payments of P2,500 to P3,000.

During the operation, the NBI seized espionage equipment, including vehicles equipped with unauthorized International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI) catchers.

This is not the first time authorities have arrested individuals suspected of being Chinese spies.

“Yes, of course, nakakaalarma po talaga iyang balita na iyan, at pagpupursigihin pa po natin at paiigtingin po natin ang ating puwersa para po masugpo ang mga sinasabi at napagbibintangang spies. At kailangan po talaga na mas maigting ang seguridad ng ating Palasyo at, of course, ng Pangulo,” (“Yes, of course, this news is truly alarming, and we will further strengthen our forces to suppress these alleged spies. We must tighten security in the Palace and, of course, for the President”) said Undersecretary Castro
