Sudan military aircraft crash in Omdurman left at least 19 people dead after an Antonov plane went down on Tuesday, local time.
According to a military statement, the aircraft crashed while taking off from Wadi Seidna air base before hitting a residential area in the Karrari district of Omdurman.
“One of our aircraft crashed during takeoff from Wadi Seidna Airport this evening, resulting in several martyrs and injured personnel, both military and civilian,” said the Sudanese Armed Forces.
The military confirmed that among the casualties were high-ranking officers, personnel, and civilians but did not specify the cause of the crash.
The Ministry of Health stated that the victims’ remains would be transferred to Nau Hospital in Omdurman.
Five civilians, including two young siblings, were hospitalized for medical treatment after sustaining injuries.
Since mid-April 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in violent conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), severely impacting civilians.
According to the United Nations and local authorities, more than 20,000 people have been killed, and an estimated 14 million have been displaced, pushing the country toward collapse.
