The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) is studying the development of a warning system for shear line events and other weather disturbances.

OCD Administrator Undersecretary Ariel Nepomuceno has recommended creating an alert system to promptly inform the public about potential impacts of weather disturbances.

The agency highlighted the challenges posed by the shear line, which can bring intense rainfall, sometimes even heavier than that of tropical cyclones.

Other weather disturbances also cause widespread rainfall, emphasizing the need for a more accurate and immediate warning system.

The OCD is also considering defining specific weather disturbances to prevent confusion among the public.

Collaboration with the state weather bureau is underway to develop a reliable, timely, and distinct warning system separate from the existing tropical cyclone alerts.

Currently, the shear line is affecting large parts of the country, with thousands already impacted, particularly in the Bicol Region, Mimaropa, and Eastern Visayas.
