Clashes in Mamasapano, Maguindanao del Sur, forced over 300 families from Barangays Libutan and Liab to flee their homes after an armed encounter between two rival groups.

According to Lt. Col. Roden Orbon, spokesperson of the 6th Infantry Division of the Philippine Army, the warring groups were led by Commander Dagadas, reportedly affiliated with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), and Ali Akbar’s group.

The conflict allegedly began after a member of Akbar’s group fatally shot Commander Dagadas’ nephew, known as alias Tro, in Barangay Libutan, prompting a retaliatory attack that led to the firefight.

The encounter was brief, and affected families have since returned to their homes.

In response, the 6th Infantry Battalion deployed additional troops to prevent further violence in the area.

Lt. Col. Orbon assured the public that the military is taking all necessary measures to maintain peace, including efforts to recover loose firearms used by both groups.
