A mother and her three-year-old daughter were found dead inside their makeshift home in Purok Tamsi, Barangay Balud, San Fernando City, Cebu, on January 28, 2025.
The victims were identified as Marites Cabaluna, 41, a former house helper from Minglanilla, and her daughter, Ajalia, who was declared dead on arrival at a hospital in Carcar City.
According to initial reports, Cabaluna was last seen at around 6:00 PM, drinking with her close friend, Dorlyn Cabillo, and another companion before she was later found lifeless.
Cabillo shared that Cabaluna had previously mentioned ending her life if no one would take her and her child in, but she dismissed it as a joke.
Hours later, upon checking on them, she was shocked to find them unresponsive.
Efforts were made to revive the child through CPR, and she reportedly vomited green fluid, but she was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital.
Cabillo revealed that she had advised Cabaluna to find a new place to stay due to issues involving her ex-partner.
She also intended to give Cabaluna financial assistance so they could temporarily live in Danao.
San Fernando Police Chief Major Michael Gingoyon stated in an interview with Bombo Radyo Cebu that authorities are awaiting autopsy results to determine the cause of death.
He added that the investigation is being intensified to uncover further details surrounding the incident.
Forensic experts have collected and are currently examining bottles of water found inside the victims’ home.
As of now, authorities have not confirmed any foul play in the case.
