100K Residents Prepare for Kanlaon’s ‘Imminent Eruption’ as Phivolcs Eyes Alert Level 4

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has warned of an imminent eruption of Kanlaon Volcano as sulfur dioxide emissions continue to drop, a sign that magma is rising to the surface.

The eruption could impact around 100,000 residents.

Ma. Antonia Bornas, chief of Phivolcs’ Volcano Monitoring and Eruption Prediction Division, noted that sulfur dioxide levels fell from an average of 5,000 tons per day to 2,000–3,000 tons.

A significant decline, she explained, indicates a buildup of magma that could trigger a major explosion.

Bornas compared Kanlaon’s eruption process to “diesel,” describing its gradual buildup compared to more active volcanoes like Mayon or Taal.

While Kanlaon has been relatively dormant, it may experience a prolonged period of eruptive unrest once awakened.

ASH PLUME CONSIDERED AN ERUPTION
Bornas also stated that the current ash plume emissions qualify as an eruption, as they involve volcanic material ejected from the crater.

PREPARATIONS FOR 100,000 EVACUEES
Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Administrator Undersecretary Ariel Nepomuceno said authorities are preparing for the possible evacuation of 100,000 residents if Alert Level 4 is raised.

OCD is coordinating with agencies to set up tent cities as evacuation centers and is considering the use of Yolanda Houses for displaced families.
