A South Korean court has rejected a second request to extend the detention of impeached former President Yoon Suk Yeol.

Yoon was arrested last week on insurrection charges, becoming the first South Korean president to face detention as part of a criminal investigation.

Prosecutors confirmed in a statement that the Seoul Central District Court dismissed their request for an extended detention.

The ruling follows a decision by the same court a day earlier, where a judge cited a “lack of sufficient grounds” to approve the extension.

Prosecutors had sought to keep Yoon in custody until February 6 to proceed with his trial before filing formal charges. However, their plans must now be adjusted.

Yoon has refused to cooperate with the investigation, with his legal defense team arguing that the investigating authorities lack the necessary legal authority.
