NATIONAL Food Authority (NFA) assured the public on Saturday that it has adequate rice buffer stocks to meet the needs of relief agencies during emergencies, even amidst the holiday season.

The assurance came in response to recent activity at Kanlaon Volcano and weather forecasts predicting rain showers and intertropical convergence affecting several areas in the country.

NFA Administrator Larry Lacson stated that field employees have been instructed to activate Operation Centers (OpCen) in areas affected by floods, typhoons, and other emergencies.

He also urged the opening of hotlines to ensure prompt coordination with relief institutions.

“Despite the holiday season, our offices remain ready to address the needs of our citizens. Preparedness is a key part of our service,” Lacson emphasized.

To meet the demand for rice relief, the NFA has strengthened its palay purchasing strategies through the Price Range Scheme (PRICERS).

These efforts are intended to support the rice requirements of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Local Government Units (LGUs), and legislators for distribution to families and individuals affected by calamities.

The NFA highlighted that it has achieved 95% of its buffer stocking target for the year, with a current stock of 5.661 million bags of milled rice ready for distribution.
