MANILA — A military reservist organization announced plans on Saturday to recruit one million new reservists over the next three years to bolster national defense and disaster response efforts.

The Association of Reservists and Reservists Administrators of the Philippines Incorporated unveiled the ambitious goal during its first general assembly, held at a national reservists’ convention organized by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

“We aim to strengthen the ranks of reservists in the Philippines and call on patriotic Filipinos to join us in defending the country and aiding in disaster relief,” said reservist Lt. Col. Michael “Mikee” Romero, who also serves as a 1-PACMAN party-list representative in the House of Representatives.

The Philippines currently has around 1.6 million reservists, including over 100,000 ready reserve personnel alongside retired and standby units.

Maj. Gen. Alejandro Nacnac, AFP deputy chief of staff for reservists and retiree affairs, emphasized the crucial roles of reservists, including expanding AFP bases, participating in civic action programs, aiding in disaster operations, and providing utilities during crises.

He explained that reservists can be deployed through either full mobilization, requiring both presidential and congressional approval, or selective mobilization with only the president’s authorization.
