The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has denied the application of a group named “Batang Quiapo” to be recognized as a party-list organization.
According to Comelec Chairman George Erwin Garcia, the group failed to submit the complete requirements needed to qualify as a sectoral group.
One of the key criteria for party-list accreditation is demonstrating that the group represents a marginalized sector.
The poll body emphasized that generalized advocacies do not meet the intent of the party-list system, which is to provide representation for specific, underserved groups in society. Additionally, Comelec noted that the proposed policies and advocacies of the group cannot be solely focused on the residents of Quiapo, Manila.
Some election watchdogs believe that the group may be attempting to capitalize on the popularity of a television drama series to attract supporters.
“Batang Quiapo” is a popular Filipino television drama series that aired in the Philippines.
The show is set in the historic district of Quiapo in Manila and revolves around the lives of the people in the area, highlighting the challenges, culture, and social issues faced by its residents.
