Opposition parties in South Korea have filed an impeachment motion against President Yoon Suk Yeol following his brief and controversial martial law declaration.

The declaration, which saw armed troops encircle parliament, ended after lawmakers climbed the compound walls to vote unanimously to revoke the order.

A two-thirds majority in parliament and the endorsement of six out of nine Constitutional Court justices are required to remove Yoon from office.

The impeachment motion, led by the liberal Democratic Party and five smaller opposition parties, is expected to be voted on tomorrow.

In the aftermath of the incident, senior policy advisers and Defense Minister Kim Yong Hyun tendered their resignations.

Lawmakers have also filed a separate impeachment motion against Kim, accusing him of recommending the martial law declaration.

Democratic Party legislators, who hold a majority in the 300-seat parliament, called for Yoon’s immediate resignation.

The party described the martial law declaration as a clear constitutional violation, citing Yoon’s failure to meet the legal requirements for such an action.
