The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) is prepared to assist Filipinos who need to evacuate from Lebanon amid the ongoing tensions in the country.

DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac stated that the department is currently seeking temporary shelters for Filipinos in Lebanon. He advised Filipinos in the area to evacuate while the airport remains open.

Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) who opt for repatriation will receive immediate assistance and reintegration support upon their return to the Philippines. The evacuation efforts are being coordinated with the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).

On Friday, the Philippine Embassy in Lebanon issued an advisory urging Filipinos to evacuate as soon as possible. Those unable to leave are encouraged to seek safe locations.

Backgrounder: The Current Situation in Lebanon

Lebanon is currently experiencing heightened tensions due to internal political instability and external pressures. The country has been grappling with a severe economic crisis, widespread protests, and an influx of refugees from neighboring countries, which has exacerbated its already fragile state.

The situation has been further complicated by clashes between various factions within Lebanon and intermittent violence spilling over from the conflict in neighboring Syria. The political gridlock and economic hardships have led to deteriorating living conditions, making the situation increasingly volatile.

Given these circumstances, many countries, including the Philippines, have issued advisories for their citizens to evacuate Lebanon while conditions allow, as the potential for further escalation remains high.
